41st Annual SR Conference and Student Auditions at OBU

The annual Southern Region Conference and Student Auditions were held November 9-12, 2016 on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR.

Conference activities began on Wednesday evening with the SR Executive Board meeting being held at DeGray Lodge and Conference Center on beautiful Lake DeGray. Governor Jon Secrest welcomed board members including newly appointed Auditions Chair Kelly Neill of Harding University, our new Region Treasurer Connie Roberts of William Carey University, and Southern Region Governor Elect Shawn Roy from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Your SR Board reviewed highlights from the 2016 national board meeting, and voted to change the fee structure for accompanists to a graded scale that increases with the added number of songs for upper level categories. The new fees will be $50 for categories requiring 3 songs, $60 for categories requiring 4 songs, and $70 for categories requiring 5 songs.

Thursday's activities included a full day of preliminary round auditions and a recital featuring tenor Arnold Rawls and his collaborative pianist Michael Borowitz. Thanks to our wonderful outgoing Auditions Chair Kim Broadwater, the auditions went off without a hitch, and Rawls and Borowitz thrilled the audience and brought the crowd to their feet as they concluded the program with some of the all-time greatest tenor arias in the repertory.

Friday morning began with our annual Region breakfast meeting and continued with a complement of semi-final round auditions, master classes, and lecture recitals. A beautiful member's banquet was offered in the Walker Conference Center that evening, featuring the jazz talents of OBU's Jazz Combo, under the direction of Dr. Craig Hamilton, coordinator of the OBU instrumental area, and time was taken to honor the service of outgoing officers Nita Herrick-Colpitts, Kimberly Broadwater, and Jon Secrest.

On Saturday, Jones Performing Arts Center played host to the Final Round of Auditions. The Center served to be the perfect venue for these auditions and beautiful singing was the order of the day. Congratulations to the fabulous students, their incredible collaborative pianists, and YOU, their marvelous teachers and mentors. Thanks for being part of this very fine experience!
